En los años 30 del siglo XX, el gondolero de la ciencia de la información, Paul Otlet, y el arquitecto estrella Le Corbusier presentaron un plan para un concurso para desarrollar la parcela vacía de la orilla izquierda de Amberes. Hicieron una versión de Amberes de su Cité Mondiale. Contendría mucha construcción en altura y enfatizaría el carácter futurista e internacional de Amberes. En el jurado del concurso estaban las estrellas de la época Henry Van de Velde y Victor Horta. A ellos no les pareció bien y el proyecto terminó en la papelera.
