Rubens era un coleccionista y amante de todo lo bello. Hoy en día, se sentiría encantado en la Kloosterstraat con sus numerosas tiendas de antigüedades. Allí encontró uno de los mayores tesoros de su vida, su primera esposa Isabella. Aquí estaba la casa de su padre, Jan Brant. La joven pareja vivió un tiempo con él. También el cartógrafo y geógrafo Abraham Ortelius residía en esta calle.
La calle debe su nombre a la legendaria abadía de San Miguel, que hasta 1124 fue la única iglesia parroquial de Amberes. Rubens completó aquí el retablo "La adoración de los Reyes". Los franceses lo llevaron consigo y le dieron un lugar de honor en el Louvre. Después de Waterloo, terminó en el Museo Real de Bellas Artes.
