El Giesel es un afluente izquierdo de aproximadamente 10 km de longitud del Fulda, que nace en la zona de Giesel a 409 m sobre el nivel del mar. Su principal curso, también denominado Gresel, drena, junto con su afluente izquierdo Saurode y su afluente derecho también llamado Giesel, aproximadamente la mitad oriental del bosque de Giesel, una gran área forestal continua de 4.259,6 ha en el este de la baja Vogelberg y al oeste del hundimiento de Fulda. Desemboca al norte del barrio de Bronnzell de Fulda, al norte y no lejos del puente de arenisca Kohlhäuser Brücke de 215 m de longitud, que consta de más de 10 arcos, cerca de Kohlhaus, en el Fulda. El perfil longitudinal del río Giesel muestra una diferencia de altura de 156 m desde la fuente hasta la desembocadura en el Fulda.
