La prisión de Attendorn se estableció en 1968 en parte del terreno del monasterio de Ewig en Attendorn, en el Sauerland, en Renania del Norte-Westfalia. En la JVA Attendorn se cumplen penas de prisión en régimen abierto y cerrado para hombres.
En 1967, los edificios del monasterio de Ewig pasaron a ser propiedad del estado de Renania del Norte-Westfalia, que estableció allí en 1968 la primera prisión abierta del estado. Desde 1978 hasta 1988, se construyó en varias fases la actual prisión, que fue oficialmente inaugurada el 25 de noviembre de 1988 con una celebración de la JVA Attendorn.
