La Petersburg era una ciudadela en el sureste de la ciudad de Osnabrück. Existió en la primera mitad del siglo XVII durante la Guerra de los Treinta Años y debía ayudar a imponer la contrarreforma en la ciudad.
En 1618, el emperador Fernando II confirmó a la ciudad de Osnabrück sus privilegios y la libertad para la Confesión de Augsburgo. Al inicio de la Guerra de los Treinta Años, la ciudad declaró su neutralidad. En octubre de 1625, Franz Wilhelm von Wartenberg fue elegido obispo de Osnabrück. Intentó, al igual que su predecesor, imponer la contrarreforma en Osnabrück. En 1628, Franz Wilhelm llegó a la ciudad con la Liga Católica y dio la orden de construir la ciudadela Petersburg para reforzar las fortificaciones de Osnabrück y como su propia residencia.
