La Batalla de las Colinas de Seelow fue la última acción defensiva en el Frente Oriental antes de la Batalla de Berlín entre la Alemania Nazi y la Unión Soviética, que trajo como consecuencia directa la ruptura de la última línea de defensa previa a la ofensiva del Ejército Rojo sobre la capital del Reich.
Hasta el inicio de 1945 el Frente Oriental se había mantenido relativamente estable desde agosto de 1944 tras las consecuencias de la Operación Bagration. Rumania y Bulgaria habían sido forzadas a rendirse y declarar la guerra a Alemania, además los alemanes habían perdido Budapest y la mayor parte de Hungría. De esta manera el llano polaco fue abierto al Ejército Rojo.
