El lugar se encuentra en el "Brunnental" en medio del bosque de Lapp aproximadamente a tres kilómetros al este del núcleo urbano de Helmsted.
En 1755 se descubrieron y aprovecharon fuertemente las fuentes de ácido sulfúrico y carbonatado. Como resultado, se desarrolló una activa industria turística que llevó a la construcción de varios hoteles de spa y un teatro de spa, así como a la creación de un parque termal. El experto en silvicultura y escritor Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Alers, al inaugurar el Clarabad, le dio al spa una importancia regional en Bad Helmstedt. Presumiblemente, debido a la continua extracción de lignito al sur de Helmstedt, las fuentes se agotaron a partir de 1894, poniendo fin a la actividad termal.
