La mina María fue una mina de carbón que fue fundada en 1848 por el maestro minero Eduard Honigmann, el juez de paz Friedrich Boelling y el fabricante textil Leopold Schoeller en la zona de Hoengen. Su nombre proviene de la esposa del primer director de la mina, Eduard Honigmann. En 1863, la mina fue transformada en la Sociedad Anónima de Minas de Aachen-Höngener, a partir de 1878 fue arrendada inicialmente por la Asociación de Compañías de Explotación de Carbón de la región de Wurm y desde 1890 comprada, así como operada por fusión con la Asociación de Minas de Eschweiler desde 1907.
