Berkenlatten fue establecido en 1607 por la familia von Arnim como un anexo en la zona de tierras de campos del pueblo deshabitado de Bischofshagen, que se volvió desierto alrededor de 1450. Al mismo tiempo, se formó el cercano pueblo de Böckenberg. Durante la Guerra de los Treinta Años, Berkenlatten fue destruido.
Al norte de la localidad se encuentra la desierta iglesia de Berkenlatten, una ruina de iglesia que se remonta al antiguo pueblo de Bischofshagen. Berkenlatten es conocido por la granja de avestruces Berkenlatten, que ha estado en funcionamiento aquí desde 2002.
