Groppendorf fue mencionado en 1112 como Grippendorf. En 1910, vivían en la comunidad rural de Groppendorf 209 personas, y en el distrito de la propiedad Groppendorf 74 habitantes. El 30 de septiembre de 1928, el distrito de la propiedad Groppendorf se unió a la comunidad rural de Groppendorf. En 1933 se fundó en el lugar el cuerpo de bomberos voluntarios que todavía existe hoy. El 1 de julio de 1950, Groppendorf fue incorporado a Hakenstedt. El 1 de enero de 2010 se llevó a cabo la incorporación a Erxleben.
En el lugar se encuentra la iglesia de Santa María, que data de principios del siglo XIII. Otros edificios protegidos son la granja en Dorfstraße 7 y la finca Veltheim en Dorfstraße 13, 15, que pertenecía a la familia von Veltheim en el castillo de Harbke.
