Fue en 1618 cuando se le cortó la cabeza al explorador y cartógrafo sir Walter Raleigh, tras un segundo intento fallido de llegar a El Dorado. Esto ocurrió en el Palacio de Whitehall, que en ese momento era la residencia principal de los monarcas ingleses en Londres.
La razón principal fue que Raleigh atacó áreas que eran reclamadas por los españoles. El embajador español presionó para que se ejecutara a Raleigh.
Su cuerpo iba a ser enterrado en la iglesia local en Beddington, Surrey, el hogar de Lady Raleigh, pero finalmente fue sepultado en St. Margaret's, Westminster, donde su tumba aún se puede visitar hoy en día.
