En 1336, una joven ingresada en el hospital de S. Donnino o S. Lorenzo fue curada milagrosamente de una larga enfermedad, por intercesión de la Santísima Virgen María. Tras el milagro, la enfermería se convirtió en oratorio; pero en el siglo XV se construyó en su lugar una nueva iglesia, dedicada a S. Maria delle Grazie, también conocida como la Iglesia de la Cama, porque se ha conservado la cama de la niña milagrosa.
