El lago se construyó a mediados de los años sesenta en la zona forestal de Hardenberg, con una playa alrededor de la charca. En el centro de la charca hay una pequeña isla. En 2008/2009 se construyó un camino pavimentado como pista de cooper, pero también destinado a personas en sillas de ruedas. También en la zona forestal alrededor de la charca hay muchos caminos para bicicletas y senderos. En el entorno de la charca recreativa hay un gran número de campings, especialmente alrededor de la aldea de Rheeze, lo que también la convierte en un atractivo turístico. Además, la charca se utiliza para patinar cuando hay heladas severas y en los últimos años se ha celebrado una zambullida de Año Nuevo cuando no hay hielo.
