Las roturas de diques suelen ocurrir en puntos débiles del dique que pueden surgir por un mal mantenimiento o por el afloramiento de aguas subterráneas. El afloramiento (emergencia de agua subterránea a la superficie terrestre) ocurre debido a un flujo de agua subterránea de un área de mayor elevación a una de menor elevación. Cuando el agua se filtra debajo de un dique, el material del dique puede ser arrastrado.
En las roturas de diques, el agua penetra en la tierra adyacente con gran fuerza, causando la formación de agujeros profundos (ruedas o canales). Debido a la profundidad de la rueda, el dique no puede ser reparado en el mismo lugar. Como el nuevo tramo del dique se ha construido alrededor de la rueda, los diques del IJssel han adquirido gradualmente un recorrido serpenteante. Las curvas en los diques a menudo indican antiguas roturas de diques.
