Peu de choses laissent présager qu'un village a jamais existé ici. Seul le nom du ruisseau (Rueselarekreek) donne un indice sur le passé. Ici se trouvait Nieuw-Roeselare, fondé en 1241. Mais il a pris fin à cause des eaux montantes d'une tempête en 1374. Au XIVe siècle, le village a même reçu des droits de ville avant sa disparition. La tempête fatale de 1374 n'était certainement pas la seule de son genre à l'époque. Entre 1214 et 1530, plus de 45 tempêtes ont été enregistrées sur la mer du Nord.
