Gevaerts Noord est une réserve naturelle le long de la rive du canal, dans la vallée de la Zuidleie. Elle est gérée par l'association Natuurpunt. Jusqu'au début du 20ème siècle, les bateaux de rivière étaient tirés par des hommes ou des chevaux. Le chemin de halage, autrefois créé dans la berge du canal, a été complètement érodé à certains endroits, ce qui a créé des rives abruptes, désormais un lieu de reproduction préféré pour le martin-pêcheur et l'hirondelle de rivage.
