Avec 'Prins de Ligne', on entend Karel van Arenberg (1515-1616). Karel, fils de Jean de Ligne et de Margaretha vander Marck, hérita du nom 'Arenberg' de sa mère, qui dans son contrat de mariage avait stipulé que ses enfants pouvaient porter le nom éteint Arenberg et les armoiries de ses ancêtres.
À l'origine, cette liaison entre la Naamsesteenweg et la Waversebaan n'était rien de plus qu'un chemin rural. Elle fut pavée et en 1905 rebaptisée rue Prinse de Ligne lors des festivités des 75 ans d'indépendance belge.
