En marchant le long de routes lentes et sans voitures, on découvre le pittoresque village de Gijzenzele et la dure 'Bataille de Gijzenzele'. Lorsque la Seconde Guerre mondiale a commencé à l'horizon, l'armée belge a construit une ceinture de bunkers autour de la ville stratégiquement importante de Gand. En mai 1940, l'attaquant allemand a été retenu ici pendant trois jours. Des panneaux d'information fournissent des explications sur ce combat sanglant à six endroits le long du parcours.
