Altdorf est surtout connu comme l’endroit où, selon la légende, Guillaume Tell a tiré la pomme de la tête de son fils. Cet acte par tradition s’est produit sur la place du marché, où en 1895, au pied d’une vieille tour (avec des fresques grossières commémorant l’exploit), il a été érigé une belle statue en bronze (par Richard Kissling de Zurich) de Tell et de son fils.
Le nouveau Vogt autrichien d’Altdorf a élevé un poteau sur la place centrale du village, a accroché son chapeau dessus et a exigé que tous les habitants de la ville s’inclinent devant le chapeau. Quand Tell passa devant le chapeau sans s’incliner, il fut arrêté. Il a reçu la punition d’être forcé de tirer une pomme sur la tête de son fils, Walter, sinon les deux seraient exécutés. On avait promis à Tell la liberté s’il réussissait à tirer sur la pomme.
Le 18 novembre 1307, Tell fendit le fruit d’un seul coup d’arbalète, sans incident.
