La ville de Petershagen, c'est-à-dire Petershagen sans les localités environnantes associées, se trouve, à part quelques maisons du "Brückenkopf", immédiatement à l'ouest de la Weser, à l'embouchure de l'Ösper. En face, sur la rive est se trouve Petershagen-Lahde.
Jusqu'au 31 décembre 1972, Petershagen était une ville dans l'arrondissement de Petershagen et le siège de l'administration de l'arrondissement. Le 1er janvier 1973, elle a été réunie avec plusieurs communes pour former la nouvelle ville de Petershagen, nettement plus grande.
