Le district de Rothenburg ob der Tauber faisait partie du district administratif de Mittelfranken en Bavière. Avant le début de la réforme territoriale bavaroise au début des années 1970, le district comprenait 61 communes. Le district n'avait pas de blason.
Les plus grandes localités étaient Schillingsfürst, Wörnitz, Dombühl et Neusitz. Du 1er avril 1940 jusqu'à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la ville de Rothenburg ob der Tauber, qui n'était pas sous l'autorité du district, faisait également partie du district.
