Le viaduc de la Barricade est situé sur l’autoroute A89 qui assure la liaison entre Clermont-Ferrand et Bordeaux. Cette autoroute, dont le Maître d’Ouvrage est l’ASF, est la première grande transversale autoroutière à vocation européenne.
Il se trouve sur le premier tronçon réalisé de 40 km entre Ussel Ouest et Le Sancy se développant parallèlement à la RN 89. Il permet le franchissement du ruisseau de la Barricade situé près de Merlines. Ce viaduc est situé dans une zone naturelle d'intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique de type II.
