Le lieu Place Dauphine est fortement lié à l'écrivain belge le plus vendu, Georges Simenon. Il n'était pas seulement célèbre pour ses livres mais aussi pour sa vie amoureuse. Il prétendait lui-même avoir couché avec dix mille femmes. Sa femme ultérieure se limitait à un millier.
C'est ici que son personnage principal, le commissaire Maigret, avait son café habituel et réfléchissait à de nombreux crimes. Cela est symboliquement bien choisi car ici se trouve aussi en réalité le cœur de la lutte contre la criminalité, avec à proximité le palais de justice et la préfecture de police.
