En Juillet 1896, une compagnie allemande stationnée à Metz fit des manœuvres et construisit un pont en bois. Des sculpteurs taillèrent une plaque commémorative dans le grès pour laisser une trace de leurs passages. Ils creusèrent aussi une «chambre» dans un rocher voisin. Pouvaient-ils imaginer que pendant la guerre de 1939/45, des soldats russes, prisonniers au Ban Saint-Jean, s'évaderaient et iraient se réfugier dans cette «grotte» ? Les habitants du secteur leur apportaient des vivres par solidarité.
