Bath a été fondée, parmi les collines environnantes, dans la vallée de la rivière Avon autour de sources chaudes naturelles où les Romains ont construit des bains et un temple, lui donnant le nom d'Aquae Sulis. Edgar a été couronné roi d'Angleterre à l'abbaye de Bath en 973. Bien plus tard, elle est devenue populaire en tant que station thermale durant l'ère géorgienne, ce qui a conduit à une expansion majeure qui a laissé un héritage d'architecture géorgienne exemplaire façonnée à partir de la pierre de Bath.
La ville est devenue un site du patrimoine mondial en 1987 et possède une variété de théâtres, de musées et d'autres lieux culturels et sportifs, ce qui a contribué à en faire un centre majeur de tourisme, avec plus d'un million de visiteurs séjournant et 3,8 millions de visiteurs d'un jour dans la ville chaque année.
