Ce canal a été creusé vers 1930 pour créer une connexion est-ouest nécessaire entre la Vecht et Hilversum. Il faisait partie d'un plan d'ouverture complet pour cette région, incluant également la construction de la route provinciale qui longe le canal. Ce plan a été conçu par l'inspecteur général des Travaux publics Anton Mussert, qui serait licencié en 1934 du ministère en raison de ses activités au sein du NSB. Grâce à ses projets, la région est devenue beaucoup plus accessible, ce qui a eu un impact positif sur le développement économique.
