Au nord-ouest de Zwolle se trouve la région de l'IJsseldelta. Très typiques ici sont les villages construits sur des tertres, permettant de garder les pieds au sec lorsque l'IJssel déborde. Parfois, même des fermes individuelles sont construites sur des tertres séparés, ce qu'on appelle des huisterpen. Les tertres les plus anciens se trouvent sur les leviers de l'IJssel.
