Déjà à l'époque romaine, il y avait un établissement ici appelé Caspingium, qui était situé sur le heerweg sud (route pour l'armée) entre Noviomagus (Nijmegen) et Lugdunum Batavorum (Katwijk). Plusieurs découvertes romaines ont été faites dans et autour d'Asperen.
Vers 1314, Asperen a obtenu les droits de ville.
Au nord d'Asperen le long de la Linge se trouve la roue du Galgenwiel. Une roue est une profonde flaque d'eau qui a été créée lors d'une rupture de digue.
