Le petit village médiéval d'IJzendijke a disparu vers 1400 à cause des tempêtes. Environ 2 km plus au sud-ouest, un hameau a ensuite vu le jour sur un point plus élevé dans la zone inondée. En 1587, une fortification a été érigée ici à la demande du commandant espagnol Alexandre Farnèse, duc de Parme. Un peu plus à l'ouest, les Espagnols ont également construit la redoute Boerenverdriet.
