Le lac a été créé au milieu des années soixante dans la forêt de Hardenberg, avec une plage tout autour de l'étang. Au milieu de l'étang se trouve une petite île. En 2008/2009, un chemin durci a été aménagé comme piste de coopération, mais aussi destiné aux personnes en fauteuil roulant. Il y a aussi beaucoup de pistes cyclables et de sentiers pédestres dans la forêt autour de l'étang. Dans les environs du plan d'eau récréatif, il y a un grand nombre de campings, surtout autour du hameau de Rheeze, ce qui en fait également une attraction touristique. De plus, le plan d'eau est utilisé pour le patinage lorsque le froid est intense et, ces dernières années, une baignade du Nouvel An a lieu quand il n'y a pas de glace.
