L'hôtel de ville a été construit entre 1958 et 1963 selon un projet des architectes J.F. Berghoef et J.F. Hondius. Les artistes plasticiens J. van Eyl, J. Goeting et F. Jacobs ont contribué à l'édifice. L'hôtel de ville est situé au Burgemeester Jansenplein 1, au centre de Hengelo. Le bâtiment présente des caractéristiques de style scandinave et italien, mêlées à des styles saxons.
