Depuis longtemps, dans le sud du Limbourg, la pierre à chaux est extraite et utilisée comme engrais et comme matériau de construction pour les maisons, les églises et les fortifications. L'extraction de la pierre à chaux loose à des fins industrielles (matière première pour la production de ciment et la préparation d'engrais) se fait dans des carrières à ciel ouvert. Lors de l'extraction à ciel ouvert, la couche de couverture d'environ 15 mètres est d'abord enlevée, puis le paquet de pierre à chaux est extrait de haut en bas.
La carrière 't Rooth est une carrière de marne, où la marne est extraite à ciel ouvert. La carrière a été partiellement réaménagée et est devenue une zone naturelle unique, où diverses espèces de plantes et d'animaux rares se sont développées.
