En 1856, il fut interdit à Amsterdam de faire ses besoins dans la rue. Pour éviter que les ruelles sombres et les endroits isolés ne deviennent encore plus des toilettes, la ville a installé 250 toilettes en fonte que l'on peut voir à plusieurs endroits comme près de la gare, Amstelveld, le Prinsengracht et le Sarphatipark.
Ces urinoirs en fonte sont appelés "curling" en raison de leur forme, ainsi que "secrets". Ce dernier mot est devenu un terme péjoratif.
