Gevaerts Noord è un'area naturale lungo la riva del canale, nella valle del Zuidleie. È gestita dall'associazione no-profit Natuurpunt. Fino all'inizio del XX secolo, le imbarcazioni fluviali venivano trainate a mano o da cavalli. Il percorso di trazione precedentemente realizzato nella scarpata del canale è completamente eroso in alcune zone, creando così le sponde ripide, ora un luogo di nidificazione preferito per il martin pescatore e la rondine di fiume.
