Le opere di Rops testimoniano il suo gusto per la fantasia e il soprannaturale e il suo repertorio è costituito principalmente di scheletri, diavoli e morti. C’è chi vede nei suoi disegni una trasposizione del ‘satanisno baudelairiano’ in termini plastici.
Altri vogliono vederci la lussuria e la vanità che si ricongiungono con la morte. Il bassorilievo rappresenta una lupa emaciata che allatta Romolo e Remo ridotti a scheletri. I due scheletri continuano ad amarsi durante la notte al di là della morte; non si tratta di un amore passionale ma di un amore galante.
È qui tutta l’ironia di Rops che lo qualifica come “vizio supremo” (Anne Goffart, in 'Musée d'Art Moderne. Oeuvres choisies', Bruxelles, MRBAB, 2001, p. 70-71).
