Letterhoutem è un villaggio nella provincia belga di Fiandra Orientale ed è una frazione del comune di Sint-Lievens-Houtem. Ha una superficie di 4,59 km² e conta 1224 abitanti. Il luogo si trova nella regione del Dender. Nel 1140 il luogo fu menzionato come Holthem. "Hout" significa bosco e "hem" indica luogo di residenza o eredità. Letterhoutem era quindi un luogo di residenza nel bosco. Più tardi il nome si evolve in Lettelhoutem, che significa "piccolo Houtem". Negli atti latini il villaggio è stato menzionato come Parvo Houthem, dove "parvus" è una parola latina per piccolo. La menzione di Littelhouthem risale al 1336. Successivamente si trovano ancora le forme Lettelhoutem e infine Letterhoutem.
