Freddy Maertens nacque a Lombardsijde nel 1952 ed è stato uno dei migliori ciclisti belgi degli anni '70 e '80 del ventesimo secolo. Ha vinto, tra l'altro, tre volte la maglia verde al Tour de France (1976, 1978 e 1981), è stato il vincitore finale della Vuelta (1977) ed è diventato due volte campione del mondo su strada (1976 e 1981). Nel 1976 è stato anche campione belga.
Nel 2004 il ciclista è stato proclamato cittadino onorario di Middelkerke. In questa occasione è stata anche svelata una sua scultura, progettata dall'artista di Ostenda Josyane Vanhoutte.
Una parte del percorso di allenamento che il ciclista utilizzava per prepararsi alle sue numerose vittorie, può essere percorsa anche oggi in bicicletta, è una route di 42 chilometri, la Freddy Maertensroute.
