Già durante la Battaglia dell'Yser nell'ottobre 1914, soldati tedeschi caduti furono sepolti nella vicina Foresta di Praet. Negli anni '50, diversi cimiteri tedeschi furono unificati nell'attuale cimitero di Vladslo. Qui riposano più di 25.000 soldati. Anche Peter Kollwitz ha qui il suo ultimo riposo. Cadde nel 1914. Sua madre, l'artista Käthe Kollwitz, onorò suo figlio con l'opera scultorea 'Il Genitore Inconsolabile'. Questo monumento può essere trovato sul retro del cimitero, vicino alla tomba di Peter Kollwitz.
In occasione del centenario della Prima Guerra Mondiale, la Foresta di Praet e il cimitero tedesco sono stati collegati da un circuito di camminata. Nella foresta è possibile ancora vedere alcuni ricordi dell'occupazione tedesca.
