Nel centro di Herne attira l'attenzione il campanile costruito con massicci blocchi di pietra. È la chiesa di San Pietro e San Paolo. L'attuale edificio ha una navata centrale e una navata laterale in stile romanico, e un coro e un campanile realizzati in gotico fiammingo. Tipici di questo stile sono le quattro torrette angolari attorno alla guglia. Notevole è l'età del comune: Herne è citato per la prima volta come 'Herinium' nel 844 e significa probabilmente 'insediamento presso la pietra'.
