Nel sud-ovest di Zonhoven troviamo lungo la linea ferroviaria Hasselt-Mol la riserva naturale dei Platwijers. L'area è di circa 100 ettari.
I Platwijers consistono principalmente in stagni per pesci artificiali e prati. L'apporto di acqua arricchita con innumerevoli nutrienti non ha giovato alla ricca flora. Infatti, assistiamo a un crescente imboschimento della vegetazione.
Tuttavia, questa riserva è soprattutto conosciuta per la sua grande ricchezza ornitologica. Numerose specie trovano qui un luogo adatto per sostare e nidificare. La maggior parte dei sentieri interni è quindi chiusa al pubblico perché altrimenti gli uccelli verrebbero disturbati troppo.
