La prima menzione delle beghine a Mechelen risale al 1209. Dopo molti anni di insediamento fuori dalle mura della città, tornarono nel centro della città nel 1578.
Nel 1629 la cappella precedentemente costruita fu sostituita da una chiesa. Pieter Huyssens e Jacques Francart progettarono un tipico esempio di architettura barocca per la chiesa del Beghinaggio (1629-1647) . Il design combina modelli italiani con un design regionale che non rompe completamente con il passato. Dopo il 1640 , Lucas Faydherbe, allievo di Rubens, è forse responsabile di parte della decorazione interna . Le influenze italiane sono evidenti attraverso un ritmo di arcate a volta sostenute da colonne corinzie e un'imponente cornice . Le volte a crociera rimandano allo stile gotico.
