Schwalmtal è un comune rurale nel circondario di Viersen nel Nord Reno-Westfalia, nella regione di confine con il Limburgo Centrale Olandese. È nato nel 1970 da una fusione tra i precedenti comuni di Amern e Waldniel. Il comune conta 19.012 abitanti su una superficie di 48,11 km².
Il comune si trova tra Niederkrüchten e Viersen, a circa 12 km a nord-ovest di Mönchengladbach. Fa parte integrante del parco naturale transfrontaliero Maas-Swalm-Nette. Il torrente Swalm scorre attraverso il suo territorio e sfocia nel fiume Maas a Swalmen, nei Paesi Bassi.
