Il fiume Emmer è stato sbarrato nel 1983 tra Schieder e Harzberg per formare il lago di Schieder. Alla diga si è registrata una differenza di altezza dell'acqua di circa 10 metri tra il livello del lago e il fiume in uscita. Nel 1996 l'azienda di fornitura energetica Wesertal ha costruito una centrale idroelettrica funzionante in modo completamente automatico con una potenza di 0,3 megawatt. Oggi l'impianto è gestito dal successore di Wesertal, l'Energieservice Westfalen Weser GmbH. Gran parte dell'acqua dell'Emmer passa qui attraverso la turbina e viene utilizzata per la produzione di energia elettrica. La parte rimanente viene scaricata tramite una chiusa regolabile idraulicamente senza utilizzo energetico.
