Il luogo si trova nella "Valle delle Fonti" nel mezzo della Foresta di Lapp, circa tre chilometri a est del centro di Helmstedt.
Nel 1755 furono scoperte e rese utilizzabili fonti ricche di zolfo e acido carbonico. Di conseguenza si sviluppò un vivace turismo curativo, che portò alla costruzione di diversi alberghi termali e di un teatro termale, nonché alla creazione di un parco termale. L'esperto forestale e scrittore Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Alers contribuì all'importanza regionale dell'attività termale a Bad Helmstedt con l'apertura del Clarabad. Probabilmente a causa dell'avanzamento dell'estrazione della lignite a sud di Helmstedt, le fonti si prosciugarono dal 1894, ponendo fine all'attività termale.
