Groppendorf viene menzionato nel 1112 come Grippendorf. Nel 1910 vivevano nella comunità rurale di Groppendorf 209 abitanti, nel distretto di Groppendorf 74 abitanti. Il 30 settembre 1928 il distretto di Groppendorf è stato unito alla comunità rurale di Groppendorf. Nel 1933 nel paese è stata fondata la ancora attiva Vigilanza dei Pompieri Volontari. Il 1° luglio 1950 Groppendorf è stato incorporato in Hakenstedt. Il 1° gennaio 2010 è avvenuta l'incorporazione in Erxleben.
Nel paese si trova la chiesa di S. Maria, risalente al primo 13° secolo. Altri edifici protetti da vincolo sono la fattoria in Dorfstraße 7 e il podere Veltheim in Dorfstraße 13, 15, appartenuto alla famiglia von Veltheim a Castello Harbke.
