Il Graal sarebbe, secondo alcuni, il calice da cui Gesù bevve durante l'ultima cena, o il calice con cui Giuseppe d'Arimatea raccolse il sangue di Gesù sulla croce. Altri lo interpretano come un concetto simbolico, che rappresenterebbe il sangue di Gesù. Le storie del Graal emergono fortemente durante il periodo d'oro dei Templari (considerati i protettori del Graal) e delle Crociate. Questo culto fu fortemente vietato dalla Chiesa, ma rimase comunque di successo per secoli. Per due secoli, però, le storie del Graal scomparvero, coincidendo con l'"estinzione" dei Templari all'inizio del XIV secolo, fino a quando Sir Thomas Malory non ridette vita alla storia nel suo "Morte d'Arthur" nel 1470, fino ai giorni nostri. Anche durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale i nazisti avrebbero creduto nella sua esistenza e avrebbero effettuato scavi sotto la guida di Otto Rahn a Montségur e a Rennes-le-Château. Secondo alcune storie, il Graal sarebbe stato portato a Glastonbury, in Inghilterra, da Giuseppe d'Arimatea. Un'altra storia è che sia stato portato in Francia, vicino a Marsiglia, da Maria Maddalena.
