I fossili di conchiglie sono stati trovati sulle rocce del monte Pelion, anche ad alte altitudini, indicando che le cime del Pelion erano un tempo sul fondo del mare. Circa 140 milioni di anni fa, un movimento orogenetico ascendente di immensa forza sollevò sopra le onde del mare una stretta striscia di terra, che iniziava dalla Macedonia e includeva Olimpo, Kissavos, Pelion e parte della Eubea settentrionale. Le montagne del Pelion risalgono a quel periodo.
