Il Mar Egeo fa principalmente parte di un bacino di retroarco (vedi grafico). Un bacino di retroarco è un tipo di bacino geologico che si trova ai margini di placca convergenti. Attualmente, tutti i bacini di retroarco sono formazioni sottomarine associate ad archi insulari e zone di subduzione. La storia post-Miocene del Mar Egeo è caratterizzata da un'estensione del retroarco iniziata già nell'Eocene.
