Dopo che Filippo Brunelleschi aveva perso la competizione per progettare le porte del Battistero, partì per un viaggio di studio. Ovunque andava misurava e studiava cose. Visitò tra l'altro il Pantheon a Roma ed era affascinato dalla cupola. Quella era la cupola più grande del mondo antico. Lì trovò l'ispirazione per posizionare una cupola simile sulla chiesa di Santa Maria del Fiore, che era rimasta scoperta per secoli.
