Matera è un comune italiano di 59 824 abitanti, capoluogo dell'omonima provincia della Basilicata.
È conosciuta nel mondo per gli storici rioni Sassi, che ne fanno una delle città ancora abitate più antiche al mondo. I Sassi sono stati riconosciuti il 9 dicembre 1993, nell'assemblea di Cartagena de Indias , patrimonio dell'umanità dall'UNESCO, primo sito dell'Italia meridionale a ricevere tale riconoscimento.
